This stoneware bust comments on contemporary society and the beauty ideals forced onto women. Women often feel the need to cover their face in makeup to hide their “flaws” or to make them more attractive. Therefore, this piece depicts cosmetics dripping or melting off a female face to reveal her natural beauty. The uncomfortable expression on her face and tilting of the head further emphasizes the feeling of ugliness without makeup so many females feel in society today.
My process consisted of sculpting a three dimensional portrait bust and throwing a stand on the potters wheel. Then I added random swatches of glaze and underglaze on the face and fired it as to reveal some raw clay as well. I also fired the stand through with no glaze.
